On behalf of the FirstNet Board and staff, I would like to thank the public safety community for their service to the nation as the 2014 Public Service Recognition Week comes to a close. Local, state, and federal first responders deserve the best tools to do their jobs, and FirstNet is committed to building a nationwide public safety broadband network that will deliver cutting-edge communications capabilities to them.

Security, innovation, and collaboration were the big buzzwords at the annual Government Information Technology Executive Council (GITEC) 2014 Summit held this week in Baltimore, MD. The focus of this year’s summit was “Inspiring Innovation in Uncertain Times,” and almost everyone I spoke with or listened to during the various presentations echoed that theme.

Yesterday was the start of the 4th annual APCO International Public Safety Broadband Summit in Washington, DC. This year’s summit focuses on the latest progress of FirstNet, as well as innovations in public safety mobile applications, cybersecurity, and developments in LTE and broadband technologies. The summit is also timely in that it comes during the annual Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW), which honors the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees.

Tomorrow is one of the biggest sporting events of the year: the Kentucky Derby – also known as the “Run for the Roses.” What does this have to do with FirstNet and a nationwide public safety broadband network? For starters, planning for and deploying the network is going to require FirstNet to harness the horsepower from all 56 states and territories; we cannot run this race on our own.

This week I had the opportunity to provide an overview of FirstNet at two homeland security roundtable discussions. At both events, I explained how FirstNet was working with the states and territories to plan for and deploy a public safety broadband network to improve communications for more than 60,000 public safety agencies in more than 3,200 counties.
