To address the growing development and use of mobile applications for emergencies, the Center for Technology and National Security Policy (CTNSP) at the National Defense University (NDU) has launched the “Disaster Apps Challenge.” The challenge asks developers not to necessarily build an application, although they won’t turn new ideas away, but to expand upon an open source disaster relief application that's already being used by citizens or first responders.

I was pleased to participate in the 2014 Metro Fire Chiefs Conference hosted by the Baltimore City Fire Department yesterday. The conference brought together more than 150 attendees, including fire chiefs from across the country and other distinguished guests such as Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. It was a great opportunity to catch up with Chief Richard Bowers from Fairfax County, VA and Chief Jon Hannan from Charlotte, NC about recent developments in their jurisdictions.

The 5th annual Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) Broadband Stakeholder meeting conference kicked off yesterday. Thanks to PSCR for planning this year’s event in conjunction with the June FirstNet Board meeting. The continuity allowed for a sustained dialogue among attendees, and the synergies of planning the two meetings together helped keep travel costs low for all parties.
