Hundreds of first responders and members of the public attended yesterday’s 2015 World Police and Fire Games Sports Extravaganza at Reston Town Center, Va – including the FirstNet team. The event was a preview of the type of events that will be held at next summer’s World Police and Fire Games, which will be held in Fairfax County, Va. The Games are a biennial sporting event open to first responders from around the world to showcase their athletic abilities in Olympic style competitions.
Yesterday, participants and audience members were treated to a bagpipe accompaniment that signaled the start of the demonstrations. First responders then displayed their expertise in a variety of athletic events: police officers on motorcycles maneuvered their way through hairpin turns and firefighters wielded heavy sledgehammers while wearing layers of heavy, fire retardant gear, in addition to other displays of carefully honed first responder talents.
Organizers also set up booths and stations to educate adults about the Games and public safety in general, as well as to entertain children. One station offered child IDs, while another allowed children to run the junior ultimate firefighter course complete with the ever popular “rescue the cat from a tree” training.
