Today is National PrepareAthon Day, which is the culmination of a campaign led by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) that encourages the general public to take steps to increase its readiness for disaster situations. This event marks the conclusion of National Preparedness Month. Below are several resources from governmental and non-government organizations to enhance and sustain preparedness during every month of the year.

  • Registering for America's PrepareAthon! is free and provides subscribers with access to preparedness resources and late-breaking news from FEMA and other emergency manager partners.
  • ShakeOut provides opportunities for homes, schools, and other organizations to practice preparedness for earthquakes.
  • Sign up for FEMA’s text-messaging service to receive safety tips and search for shelters and disasters discovery centers. The service allows subscribers to select from a variety of disaster types to customize the messages they receive.
  • Download the FEMA mobile app to your smartphone or tablet to receive safety and survival tips for a variety of natural disasters, including earthquakes, tornadoes, flash floods, and wildfires. Become a disaster reporter and use the app to submit real-time photos of extreme events in your community that can be used by emergency managers in response.
  • Download apps from the American Red Cross for instant access to a range of topics including a handy locator for emergency shelters, first aid tipsand an app for blood donations.
  • To keep up with breaking weather-related updates, bookmark mobile.weather.gov and hurricanes.gov/mobile on your smartphone and tablets.

In addition, to track breaking developments over Twitter, the hashtag #SMEM (social media emergency management) is a helpful source for tips and opportunities to engage with the emergency management community. It also provides updates from local media outlets and national community emergency management authorities before, during, and after emergencies. Additional mobile apps to increase preparedness can be found at USA.gov Apps Gallery.
