Megahertz on the Rez: Tribal police turn to technology to help secure, protect those they serve

September 27, 2016

When the Las Vegas Paiute Tribal Police are called on to search for and rescue a missing person, they turn to broadband technologies to help, say officers Adrian Calimquim and James Dew in the video below.  Faced with finding a missing and possibly incapacitated person wandering the desert, they used their smart phone apps to get the lay of the land, enabling them to locate the missing person and get him to the hospital quickly.

Emerging communication technology helps them in other ways, too, say Calimquim and Dew.  A key part of the Paiute Tribal Police mission is to “earn and maintain public confidence and mutual respect by being responsible to those served.” Using their body cameras, they can show those they serve what happens from the beginning to the end of an incident.  “The increase in technology makes me feel a lot safer,” says Calimquim. “At the end of the night, you feel good that you’re making a difference in the community you police.”
