By Christopher Algiere, FirstNet Federal Outreach Branch Chief
Last week I had the opportunity to meet with stakeholders attending the Southwest Border Communications Working Group (SWBCWG) in El Paso, Texas. The SWBCWG, administered by our colleagues at the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Emergency Communications (OEC), was hosted by the DHS Customs and Border Protection’s El Paso Sector Headquarters. The SWBCWG meets quarterly and is comprised of representatives from local, state, tribal, regional and federal agencies from across the southwestern border.
Last week's meeting was a great opportunity to share updates on FirstNet's activities and to learn more about challenges facing the public safety community along the border. The operational environment presents a number of challenges that are relatively unique to the region, including the fact that they must consider regulatory differences between the United States and Mexico on key communications issues.
Presentations from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Border Patrol, States of New Mexico and Texas, and the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo covered a wide range of topics from organizational overviews, ongoing regulatory procedures, and real-life examples demonstrating how interoperable communications are an essential element of day-to-day and emergency operations.
I gained some valuable insights and great connections across the public safety community. Thanks to OEC and members of the SWBCWG for inviting me to the quarterly meeting. I look forward to possible future interactions with the group and its dedicated members.
